Pā‘upena

Pā‘upena: in Hawaiian means a series or network of pens or corrals. Ka‘ono‘ulu Ranch owner Henry Rice had said Pā‘upena is the traditional name for more than 5,000 Upcountry Maui acres that DHHL administers. Pā‘upena likely was a 19 th-century paniolo (cowboy) term for this area used to graze cattle. Kaona (poetic meaning) of Pā‘upena may refer to a pā (pen or house lot) and ‘upena (net) that gathers together people to plan, develop and live in a community of house lots.
