12/1/23 Pā‘upena CDC hosts DHHL’s Planning program manager Andrew Choy, Maui land agent Shelly Carreira and DHHL Water consultant, Dr. Jonathan Scheuer to discuss a long-term license and county water meter for the 127-acre Keokea/Waiohuli homelands tract, for which Pa‘upena has a Right Of Entry.

11/21/16 and 1/23/17 — Pā‘upena principals testify before the Hawaiian Homes Commission at DHHL Kapolei, O‘ahu.
11/29/16 — Pā‘upena Community Development incorporates as a Hawai‘i nonprofit.
12/24/16 — Pā‘upena CDC submits a land-use application for a two-year due-diligence Right Of Entry to 5,057 Waiohuli-Keokea acres, to run 100 or more head of cattle and to train beneficiaries in cattle ranching. After eight months, Pā‘upena still awaits a DHHL Land Management Division decision on the application.
12/29/17 — Pā‘upena board members co-found the Maui Homestead Farmers & Ranchers Association to serve and advocate for 5,223 beneficiaries on Maui agricultural and pastoral wait lists (4,614 ag wait-listers and 609 pastoral wait-listers, per website https://dhhl.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/2016-06-30_02-Maui_Waitlist_103pgs.pdf, Page 3).
2/3/17 — Pā‘upena CDC receives IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
3/15/17 — Pā‘upena members participate in a huaka‘i hele (field trip) to 800 Honokowai acres of homestead farmlands in Lahaina, West Maui.
7/8/17 — Pā‘upena’s Norman Abihai launches the Keokea Farmers Market from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second and last Saturdays of the month at the Keokea nursery site, to coincide with Kula Hospital’s Kala Iki thrift-store hours; with an 11 a.m. mini-lecture series on farming/ranching-related topics.
9/22/17 — Pā‘upena has organized Puwalu ‘O Ke Kahua Mahi‘āi — The Fruitful Farmer Conference/campout set from 9 a.m. 9/22/17 through noon 9/24/17 at Waiohuli homestead on ag/ranching-related subjects; free, all welcome.
The map from DHHL’s 2004 Maui Island Plan, Section 3-16, page 99, shows 5,057 Waiohuli-Kēōkea acres inside the outlined oblong tract and in the bottom three-fourths, containing an exploratory well and Pu‘u O Kali. Pā‘upena CDC seeks to repatriate the land from non-beneficiaries, for use by beneficiaries of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920 federal trust. Thus, Pā‘upena awaits word on its Dec. 24, 2016, application to the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) for a two-year due-diligence Right-Of-Entry to the acreage.
