ATTENTION MAUI NUI BENEFICIARIES ADVOCACY NEEDED!

ATTENTION MAUI NUI BENEFICIARIES!!

Support for East Maui Regional Community Board Nomination of Jonathan Likeke Scheuer!

On Tuesday July 18, 2023 Maui County Council will hold its Regular Meeting on the agenda is Resolution 23-179 Nominating and Approving the Appointment of Jonathan Likeke Scheuer to the East Maui Regional Community Board. We are asking for beneficiaries from Maui Nui to join us in supporting this nomination!
The best is “in person” testimony at the Maui County Council Chamber 8th Floor at 9am we understand some maybe working, also anticipating testimonies in opposition to his nomination.
Deliberations to address advocacy strategy will be held on the SCHHA Maui/Lana’i Mokupuni Meeting – Thursday July 13, 20223 starting at 5pm via zoom.
This is where beneficiary testimony in support will be most effective. Testimonies will remind the Maui County Council that the authority to appoint rests with the Hawaiian Homes Commission and they rendered their decision. They cannot not approve him. The message will need to be a clear reminder that HHC is final authority in this matter. We know there will be a conflict because it falls on the same day as the Hawaiian Homes Commission meeting.
On June 19, 2023 Advocacy went out to the Maui Nui beneficiary community. To strongly request that support the efforts in requesting the Maui County Council to defer any decision on the seat that represents the Hawaiian Homes Commission until the Commission is given the opportunity to hear what beneficiaries have to say and make a decision.

Mahalo Nui to Maui Commissioner Randy Awo for the open line of communication with beneficiaries.

Attached you will find the petition deployed regarding the appointments to the East Maui Regional Community Board to establish an 11-member board with seven members appointed by the Council by resolution and four appointed by the Mayor, with various qualifications and initial terms. Challenging the process will ensure the future of Maui County Community Water Authorities/Regional Community Boards are properly represented.

This nomination process was not followed by both the former DHHL Chair Ikaika Anderson and the current DHHL Chair Kali Watson in submitting a name without the approval of the Hawaiian Homes Commission.  On June 18, 2023, DHHL Chair Kali Watson transmitted to Chair Shane Sinenci a letter rescinding its June 12, 2023 letter and withdrawing the recommendation for the Hawaiian Homes Commission representative to the East Maui Water Authority Board.

We want to MAHALO Chair Kali Watson for his swift consideration in this matter.

DHHL will transmit the Hawaiian Homes Commission representative to the East Maui Water Authority Board after approval has been given by the Commission on its representative.

Voices of Homestead Associations ( HBA’s) SCHHA and Beneficiary Waitlisters (AHHL)  organizations collectively believe that the Hawaiian Homes Commission should have the opportunity to choose who will speak on their and our behalf.  Please understand that the person nominated to fill that seat will be the voice of the Commission, and through them represent us, the beneficiaries. There was a tight timeline to participate in this petition which closed Thursday 6/22/23 then was submitted with testimony for County Council Meeting on Friday 6/23/23.
